A 58-pounder taken from the Santee-Cooper Reservoir in July of 1964 holds the title of biggest channel catfish catch on the planet. ![]() The world record channel catfish belongs to South Carolina. Only New Hampshire’s 12-pound, 4.8-ounce record channel cat weighs less. While North Carolina is known for its quality catfishing, the state’s record is the second-lowest weight in the country. ![]() Stone used cut bait to land his lunker, which was weighed on certified scales at Tractor Supply in Biscoe. Stone pulled a 23-pound, 5-ounce channel catfish from a Moore County pond in September to break a 50-year-old record held by Rocky Mount’s E.J. Just a few months after a pair of North Carolina catfish records were broken in July, Pinehurst angler John Stone has added another heavier-than-ever catch to the list.
